Desert is BACK!!!
Desert is BACK!!!
I’m a little fed up with salads. “HE’S LOST IT!!!” you’re saying. Just hear me out.
When you eat as much clean food as I do, it gets tough to cram down as much salad as I need to keep my energy up. 10 cups of spinach is a lot...A LOT. Not to mention the only way to make that much food even palatable is to have some sort of salad dressing, which probably has a fair amount of fat in it. No problem if this is a good olive oil based home-brew...but I just don’t trust most restaurants to help me out here.
That’s why I’ve switched to a much more reasonable alternative. Kick the salad, bring on the desert.
Contrary to popular belief...a real food diet doesn’t mean no sweets. One comment that I hear all the time is “I want to eat healthy, but I just crave sweet things”. With a little practical judgement, this should be no problem.
I try to get at least half to two thirds of my carbohydrates from veggies, and finish the rest of my meal with fruit. Publix has had an awesome sale on strawberries and melon, and I’m devouring it!
Fruit generally has a higher glycemic index and glycemic load, meaning you’ll release more insulin into the bloodstream than you would with veggies. An all fruit meal is also much quicker burning and you’ll be hungry sooner. But, when you mix it with your trusty veggies, it turns into a pretty sweet little meal.
Here are a few tuppereware faves:
5 oz deli turkey
2 cups steamed broccoli
Handful of almonds
+
1 cup strawberries
1 cup grapes
or
7 oz pre-cooked shrimp w/ lemon and pepper
2 cups steamed cauliflower
1 cup steamed brussel sprouts w/ lemon
1/2 of a haas Avocado
+
1 bosc pear (I wait till it’s reeeeeally ripe and sweet)
Play with some veggie/fruit combos and keep track of how hungry you get before your next meal. If you’re starving, maybe dial down the fruit and replace with a few more veggies. Don’t forget to add some healthy fat to each meal and snack.
This makes for a much more manageable meal, and during the summer the fruit is just too damn awesome not to dig in!
Have fun
